KUCHING: The Urology Department of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) in collaboration with the Malaysian Urological Foundation (MUF) will be organising a Prostate Awareness Campaign from April 6-7 and on April 20.

The two-day awareness campaign from April 6-7 will be held at Vivacity Megamall and on April 20 at the SGH.

The campaign at Vivacity, which will take place from 10am to 6pm, is to educate members of the public about prostate cancer and other common urological problems.

SGH Department of Urology senior consultant Dr Teh Guan Chou, in a press statement, said prostate cancer was the second most commonly occurring cancer in men worldwide, with 1.3 million new cases in 2018.

In Malaysia, he said a larger percentage of men were diagnosed late with prostate cancer compared to Western countries.

Other common conditions affecting the prostate gland were benign prostatic hyperplasia, which might cause with urinary problems such as weak urinary stream, urinary incontinence, needing to go to the toilet more often and waking up at night frequently to pass urine amongst others, he added.

Dr Teh said there would be a poster gallery, education talks and question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions with urologists as well as recreation and entertainment to make the campaign at Vivacity an engaging and enlightening experience for all.

“The campaign at Vivacity also serves as an avenue for those who want to register for the screening clinic held at SGH on April 20,” he added.
