KUALA LUMPUR: National carmaker, Proton saw another strong performance in November as year-on-year sales (y-o-y) for the month grew by 100 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) with 9,643 units sold.
Proton Holdings Bhd in a statement said, the cumulative volume for the year stood at 89,476 units, which marks a 50.1 percent growth y-o-y while the market share has also grown and was estimated to be now at 16.2 percent for the whole of 2019.
The Proton Saga posted a third consecutive month of sales breaking the 4,000 unit barrier as 4,091 cars were delivered in November. This allowed Proton’s newest model to return to the top of the A-segment sedan sales table with 34,422 sold so far in 2019.
Its volume growth now stands at an impressive 32 percent, by far the best for any model in the segment. “Our challenge is to increase our production capacity for the Saga and we have had intensive discussions with our vendors to work towards a volume increase next year,” said chief executive officer Dr Li Chunrong.
Meanwhile, the sales of Proton’s first sport utility vehicle (SUV), the Proton X70 also showed no signs of abating. Proton X70 will celebrate its first anniversary on Dec 12. “The Proton X70 has been our biggest success story for 2019.
It enabled Proton to enter a new segment with zero market experience and a year later, we have emerged as the undisputed sales leader,” said Li, adding that sales for the Proton X70 have picked up with 2,000 units sold in November.
“The uptrend shows customers are still keenly interested in the most intelligent SUV on sale and we target to grow that interest in the coming year,” he added.
As the new plant extension in Tanjung Malim approaches the commencement of production activities, Proton’s engineers according to him, have pledged to deliver products that match or are better in quality than vehicles produced by other members of the Geely Auto group of automotive brands. – Bernama
