MIRI: Miri is celebrating its rich cultural heritage with the launch of “Proudly Sarawak: Best of Sarawak Craft”, a vibrant event that spotlights local craftsmanship and traditions.
Running from Nov 23 to Dec 3, this cultural extravaganza aims to position Miri as the primary hub for Sarawak crafts, with plans to extend its reach to include crafts from the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP EAGA) for the entire Borneo region, as revealed by Tourism Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew and Miri mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.
In its second year, the event builds on the success of the Batik Linut Product unveiling by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Nov 24, 2021.
“Beyond a mere follow-up, this year’s event emerges as a dynamic chapter in the collective narrative, striking a chord with the hearts of Sarawakians.
“Envisioned not merely as an annual gathering but as a catalyst for Miri’s evolution into the cultural hub of Sarawak, it stands as a bold step forward – a commitment to sculpting the regional narrative.
“This event is a legacy in the making, inviting all to harmonise with the spirit of Sarawak, celebrating roots, creativity, and a shared journey,” according to a statement.
Held at Bintang Megamall Miri, the event showcases 20 vendors registered with the Sarawak Craft Council, presenting a diverse array of traditional and contemporary crafts from the northern region.
Organised by the Sarawak Craft Council and Batik Linut Sdn Bhd, Proudly Sarawak aims to preserve and promote Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage.
Batik Linut managing director Diana Rose noted that the event is not just a showcase of crafts but “a celebration of our heritage and a testament to the skill and creativity of Sarawakian artisans.”
Beyond its cultural significance, Proudly Sarawak serves as a boost for Miri’s tourism industry.
With its strategic location next to Brunei and Sabah and direct flights from Singapore via Scoot and AirAsia, Miri is already an enticing destination for tourists. The event is expected to further enhance Miri’s appeal, drawing visitors from afar.
Positioned as a starting point for the regional initiative, Miri aims to become a cultural landmark with the upcoming Miri Convention Centre.
All Sarawakians are invited to join Proudly Sarawak: The Best of Sarawak Craft to experience the vibrant tapestry of Sarawakian craftsmanship, interact with local artisans, and celebrate the unique cultural identity that makes Sarawak special.
