KUCHING: Five roads will be temporarily closed next week to accommodate the road cycling events during the 21st Malaysian Games (SUKMA).

The events, scheduled from Aug 14 to 17, will start and finish at Matang Polytechnic, covering a distance of 144km for both individual and team events. Fifteen contingents from across Malaysia, including Brunei, are expected to participate.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will oversee safety and traffic management to ensure the events proceed smoothly and safely, minimising traffic congestion and preventing any untoward incidents.

“The main objective of the traffic operation is to ensure a smooth and safe race without disrupting public comfort.

“Consequently, several roads in Padawan district will be part of the cycling race circuit and will be temporarily closed,” he said.

The affected roads are:

* Access Road to Matang Polytechnic.

* Jalan Pehin Sri Adenan Satem – Jalan FAC.

* Jalan Kampung Ulu Selang – Telaga Air traffic light.

Mancha said that announcing the road closures in advance will alert the public and help them plan alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion on these dates.

The public is advised to choose alternative routes from Aug 14 to 17 to avoid traffic jams.

“Those with business in the city centre should plan their travel times carefully and follow traffic control signs as directed by on-duty traffic police officers.

“Legal enforcement under the Road Transport Act 1987 will be taken against anyone who disobeys instructions from on-duty officers,” he said.

For further inquiries, the public can contact the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department operations room at 082-274259, the Padawan Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division office at 082-862643, or the 21st SUKMA secretariat at 082-495555.
