KUCHING: Although not a few are dismayed, smokers in general are alert to the newly enforced ban against smoking at eateries and enclosed premises or spaces.
During a random check at a few eateries in Petra Jaya yesterday, the local people were very much aware of the ban.
A cashier, who wanted to remain anonymous, said most smokers automatically distanced themselves from non-smokers (in fact more than the three-metre ruling). However, a few smokers (probably the most ignorant) just light up nonchalantly in the midst of the prohibited areas.
“I think some of those who puffed within the permitted distance have not realised that the law has come into effect,” said the cashier.
She also revealed that her boss had asked the eatery workers to put up many no-smoking signs.
Lin, 30, who sells Laksa Penang, said that most people were already aware of the law.
“If not, the workers will remind them politely,” she said.
A 40-year-old satay seller, Man, said he supports the enforcement of the law against smoking although he himself smokes.
“I support this law because we should he kind to those who don’t smoke, especially pregnant women and small children,” he said.
