SIBU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said in order for the state to properly address the Covid-19 pandemic, cooperation from the public and private sectors is crucial.

He also said that the enforcement of movement restrictions will be stepped up to ensure compliance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He said this after attending a briefing on the Covid-19 updates in Sibu Division by the Divisional Disaster Management Committee here today (Jan 31).

The chief minister urged the people to continue to support the frontliners and assured that the state government would continue with the Track-Test-Isolation-Treatment strategy, to break the Covid-19 chain.

During the briefing, Abang Johari was informed that some 27,000 swabs were done on individuals in Sibu Division over the past three weeks resulting in 1,626 positive cases. A total of 94 longhouses in the division have been affected by the pandemic.

The committee also said that food assistance worth RM5 million have been distributed to over 72,000 recipients since the movement control order (MCO) was implemented in Sibu on Jan 16.

The MCO in the Sibu Division will be in force until Feb 14.
