KUCHING: Reserving parking spaces meant for the public by business owners is still a bane.
This practice is not only wrong but also common, especially at crowded areas.
A visit to Green Hill Road near here and one can see cones, chairs and even do-it-yourself “No Parking” signs in front of a number of premises.
This only illustrates the lack of civic mindedness among certain people.
A resident, who wanted to be known as Raf, 21, told New Sarawak Tribune that local authority enforcement officers would do regular spot checks.
“However, once they leave, the cones are back at the bays!” he lamented.
Parking spaces in the city are designated by their colour.
Those with yellow lines are reserved by business owners legally while the parking spaces painted with white lines and with numbers are for the public.
Another resident, Rodziah, said: “Both seasonal and daily parking bays are gazetted by the authorities.
“People would point their fingers at the authorities but this does not portray the reality of the situation.”
The 61-year-old added that the lack of awareness among the public and the mentality of society itself were among the contributing factors to this perennial problem.
“For me, in order to become a civilised society, such negative mentality and behaviour should be discarded by everyone.”
