KUCHING: The public has been called to prioritise their heart health, with something as simple as walking a mile daily.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said heart-related diseases are among the leading causes of death in Malaysia, including Sarawak.
“There is a growing queue at the Sarawak Heart Centre despite years of efforts to promote healthy living.
“So, although this World Heart Day event today only takes place once a year, every day we must remind ourselves to take care of our hearts. We don’t want to lose you,” he said.
He said this when officiating at the annual World Heart Day 2024 held at Taman Perpaduan this morning (Sept 29).
Dr Sim further said the Sarawak Heart Centre has treated nearly 250,000 patients over the past 20 years and the number continues to rise.
“That is why it is important to take preventive action to avoid heart disease.
“And with that I want to thank all for coming here today. You are here because you love your heart, family, and your friends,“ he said.
Earlier, the event organised by Sarawak Heart Foundation aimed to raise public awareness about the heart’s health.
The highlight of the event was the ‘Walk-A-Mile’ event, which saw participants gathering at the venue as early as 6.30 am for the walk despite the rainy weather.
Meanwhile, the event marks more than 20 years since the foundation began hosting the event, which takes place on the last Sunday of September.
Among those present were Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Hilmy Othman and Sarawak Heart Foundation Board of Trustee member Datuk Anne Teng.
