KUCHING: Sarawak has identified Puncak Borneo, Samarahan, Julau, and Sarikei as potential cocoa growing regions.
Deputy Minister of Plantations, Industries, and Commodities Datuk Willie Mongin said 150 hectares of land in Sarawak is currently being developed for this purpose.
“Since it is a two-year plan, we will continue to develop those areas till next year, which is until 2023.
“Hopefully it will go well,” he said during a press conference after officiating at the Super Cocoa Trainer (SME) course’s closing ceremony at Harbour View Hotel here today.
Willie pointed out that the plan set a goal for the government to cultivate cocoa on 1,000 hectares of land throughout Malaysia.
In Sabah, 350 hectares of land is currently being farmed, he said.
Another 200 hectares are in the peninsula, he said, adding that cocoa agriculture has begun in both Sarawak and Sabah.
