KUCHING: Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in collaboration with the Pusat Khidmat Tanjong Datu N3, Ministry of Local Government and Housing Sarawak, Sarawak State Health Department and Sarawak General Hospital will hold a handover of Reading Seeds Kit ceremony to mothers on January 31, 2018 at 9.30 am at Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak, Sematan and 11.00 am at Lundu Hospital.
The handing-over ceremony will be graced by the Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Datin Patinggi Hajah Jamilah Haji Anu, ADUN N3 Tanjong Datu.
The Reading Seeds program is a continuation of the Born to Read Program initiated and organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak since 2004 aimed at promoting early literacy in a child’s growth and development.
The aim of Reading Seeds is to ensure that every baby born in the government General Hospital/ Klinik Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak shall be given a Reading Seeds kit upon discharge.
The Reading Seeds Kit contains specially designed baby books with reading manuals for parents and information/directories on nearby libraries where parents can get support or assistance and register as members, when necessary.
The books for the kits were written by volunteers of this program; Madam Angel ine Lim Sueh Hong, an illustrator, Mr. Chai Yang Fung, a graphic designer and Madam Suminah Samsolmoharip, a teacher at Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah Kuching.
Pustaka will conduct workshops for parents on how to conduct reading sessions with their babies, and also for the nurses at the maternity wards/clinics on the implementation of the program. The progress and effectiveness of this program will be evaluated throughout the year.
This project will continue over time, to ensure Sarawak’s communities are lifelong learners and essential tool in order to survive the digital age.
The first handover of Reading Seeds Kit ceremony was held on 23rd October 2017 at the Sa rawa k Gene ra l Hospital and was graced by Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development and Dalat State Assemblyman, Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Meanwhile on November 28, 2017, about 100 Reading Seeds Kit were given to all mothers at Kuala Oya Health Clinic and Mukah Hospital.
