KUCHING: Sarawak United United People’s Party (SUPP) will be setting up a new wing and unit to meet the aspirations of the younger generation.
The Women wing of SUPP will set up a new wing, to be called Puteri Wing, catering to those aged 18 to 28.
On the other hand, the Youth wing of SUPP will form a unit, to be called Muda Unit and it will design and plan programmes specifically for those aged 18 to 28.
This was among resolutions proposed and passed during the SUPP’s Annual Delegates Conference (ADC) 2021 held at its headquarters which was attended by 279 delegates on Sunday (Jan 16).
Speaking at the press conference, SUPP president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that an amendment to the party’s constitution would be made to allow for the establishment of the new wing.
“Both the wanita (women) and youth have proposed that we set up a new wing and unit for those 18 to 28 years old.
“So, the structure of this wing and unit, we will leave it to a smaller group to draw up the criteria and the details.
“This (setting up of Puteri Wing and Muda Unit) is very important for us to move forward,” he pointed out.
Meanwhile, SUPP Women chief Kho Teck Wan said the women wing had discussed extensively on the formation of the new wing.
“First of all, our resolution is to get endorsements from party central so that we can set something up for the 18 to 28-year- olds.
“This is knowing the fact that the women alone cannot attract younger people to join us.
“Therefore, this will be an independent unit where the young women will have their own group to lead on their own and the least is that we might be an adviser to them if they make mistakes and we will come in to assist them,” she said.
Commenting further on the Muda Unit, SUPP Youth chief Michael Tiang said SUPP need not amend the constitution to form the Muda Unit.
“Since the formation of the party in 1959, the age qualification for a new member is 18 years and above. So whoever is 18 years old ]can join our youth section, therefore we do not need to amend our party rules and regulations to set up a new wing to cater to party members aged 18 to 28.
“So, we have resolved to form a new unit called the Muda Unit,” said Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman.
He added the unit would plan new strategies to reach out to those aged 18 to 28, and subsequently recruit them as party members.
“We understand this age group has different needs and aspirations compared to other age groups.
“Therefore, we hope this unit will focus on how to address the young people’s needs and aspirations with our new programmes and activities,” he said.
Also present was SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting.
