SARIKEI: The construction of a new jetty at Sungai Nyelong, costing RM16 million, will be carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak as the implementing agency.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the project aims to alleviate frequent traffic congestion on several main roads in the area.
“Once completed, the project is expected to enhance the comfort and safety of road users in Sarikei by providing a more accessible and convenient jetty,” he said during a visit to the project site on Tuesday.
He also highlighted that Sarikei currently has three commercial jetties along Sungai Nyelong and within the town centre.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also Sarikei MP and Repok assemblyman, expressed his gratitude to Lee for spearheading the construction of the new jetty.
