KUCHING: The number of rabies cases in Sarawak is still under control but those in the fight to eliminate the disease must not be complacent.
In commenting on this, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg pointed out that rabies is very dangerous as it can kill.
He noted that Sarawak has a problem with stray dogs criss-crossing its border that is over 1,000 kilometres long.
“The state government is very determined to eliminate the rabies epidemic using various approaches such as vaccination and integrated operations involving the cooperation of various parties.
“For that, we are willing to allocate a large budget to finance a series of operations since 2018 involving many workers, logistical requirements, vaccination costs and other expenses.
“Alhamdulillah, we are grateful that this operation has succeeded in reducing the spread of the epidemic to a minimum level,” he said during a press conference after launching the Immune Belt Enforcement Team (IBET) at Dataran Perayaan yesterday (Sept 26).
Abang Johari then congratulated the officers and agencies involved for their high commitment to the anti-rabies operations.
