SARIKEI: Three samples taken from dogs in the Julau district were confirmed positive for rabies by Perak Veterinary Services Depar tment, said Local Government and Housin g Ministry Public Health head, Dr Cheong Yaw Liang.
He said the f i rst case of rabies involved a dog caught ne a r S e k o l ah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Julau No. 2 on Dec 31, 2017.
“Two other cases involve stray dogs caught by the roadside at Rumah Paing, Km 19 Jalan Kelupu-Julau-Dur i n (KJD) and at Jalan Julau/ Entabai (about two kilometers from Julau Town) on Jan 8,” he said. So far, he said, no cases of rabies virus transmission to humans have been detected in the area.
Sarikei Veterinary Services Department Officer, Mathew Joan Sigai said the department had given anti-rabies vaccination to dogs found within 10- kilometre radius from where the three rabies-positive dogs were located. He added that 1,208 dogs found in Jul au and some areas under the Sibu Rural District Council were given the vaccines.
