MUKAH: Police seized more than 49 cartons of alcoholic beverages worth RM8,535 in Kampung Tegak on Tuesday (April 26).
The alcoholic drinks included Kingway (30 cartons), Tsingtao Gold (seven cartons), Camel Premium Beer (nine cartons) and Snow Beer (three cartons).
Mukah District police chief Deputy Superintendent Muhamad Rizal Alias said a police team raided a two-storey house in Kampung Tegak Mukah at 12.20 pm.
“Upon arrival at the house, we met a 54-year-old local man and explained that police would be searching the ground floor which was turned into a shop selling groceries and a store.
“When we inspected the store we found alcoholic beverages of various brands whereby customs duties were apparently not paid,” he said.
The drinks were confiscated and initial police investigation showed that the suspect was using the ground floor as a grocery store. The suspect is also understood to be selling liquor in small quantities.
The seized items will be referred to the Department of Chemistry and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and the case will be investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967 (Liquor).
If convicted the offender may be fined not less than 10 times the value of the seized products or RM100,000 (whichever is higher) and up to not more than 20 times the value or RM500,000, or imprisonment of not less than six months or not more than five years, or both.
