KUCHING: A light drizzle early Sunday did not dampen the spirits of some 100 residents in Satok who took part in a Merdeka Walk programme.

They walked 1.4km from Kampung Bandarsah in Satok towards the Darul Hana Bridge at Kuching Waterfront bearing the Jalur Gemilang.

Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, who flagged off the participants said the programme was among the prelude events to the National Day celebration in the constituency.

“These events are not only a way to honour the country’s history but also to foster unity and harmony among the residents.

“While we are thankful and grateful for our independence, it is crucial that we maintain our unity and harmony,” he told reporters on today (Aug 25).

Ibrahim said it has been a tradition in Satok to celebrate events such as National Day and Sarawak Day and waving the Jalur Gemilang and Ibu Pertiwi flags.

“Similarly, on Sarawak Day which falls on July 22, we have prelude events with the Sarawak flag flown alongside the Jalur Gemilang,” he said.

About 150 flags were distributed to be flown at their residences as well as surrounding areas for the national month.

“These events are more than just a tradition, they are a reflection of the people’s commitment to building their state together, free from political polemics,” he said.

Earlier, Ibrahim also participated in an aerobics session along with 200 other participants at the event.

Also present during the two events were political secretary to the Premier, Abdul Samat Gany; PBB Muhibbah sub-branch head Ali Sujang; Pemanca Rosli Sahari and Kampung Muhibbah community leader Abdul Kudus Lait Ahmad.
