KUCHING: The Gold Ribbon Sculpture Gallery was launched yesterday at the Spring Shopping Mall here with the objective of raising awareness of childhood cancer as well as supporting the budding artists.

The event, to end on Oct 6, is organised by the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) with the support of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak students from the Faculty of Arts & Design (Department of Fine Arts) in conjunction with Childhood Cancer awareness month in September.

Gracing the event were UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali and his wife Datin Marilyn Edna Perreau. Also present were the Spring Management Services assistant advertising and promotions manager Victoria Jong, TEA FM programme director Amelyn Bong, SCCS honorary secretary Mary Kiu and a number of children and families who have been supported by the SCCS.

The gallery showcases eight gold ribbon sculptures, each mindfully designed with an inspiration and theme explored, based on the artists’ take on childhood cancer. In addition, visitors can learn more about the society and childhood cancer by scanning a QR code attached to each sculpture, which leads to a video about survivors, parents and volunteers.

SCCS will also have an awareness booth during the weekends, in which members of the public can learn more about the common types of childhood cancers and their symptoms, as well as how the society supports childhood cancer patients and their families in Sarawak.

Apart from a line-up of fun activities, attendees can also find out more on how they can help and support SCCS through volunteering opportunities, merchandise sales, as well as to collaborate on raising childhood cancer awareness.

The public can also sign up for the Monthly Donation Program known as ‘SCCS Heart of Gold’, an auto-debit process where public can donate monthly to SCCS, from a minimum of RM30 (RM1 per day).
