Go for style and comfort this Eid

Those who are familiar with the works of Kuching-born stylist turned fashion designer Yacub Taha will instantly recognise his trademark exuberant play in colours and oversized silhouette. He is best known for illuminating blocks of colour into pop-out designs while maintaining the current trend.

Last Sunday, Yacub displayed an exciting mix of colours through his second Raya collection at The Hills Shopping Mall in Kuching. It was a contrast from last year’s collection, which was a clash of fabrics and prints. This year, Yacub presented his ready-to-wear Raya collection in bright colours on print with a classic yet modern twist, and the collections were paired with Kesya Fatin’s bag collection.

With a total of 36 pieces, Yacub shared that his aim this year was to release comfortable pieces. “My Rayacutha 2024 this year is mostly ‘santai-santai’ (chill and comfortable) pieces. The tops can be worn with jeans, and because of the print, you can wear the sarongs with a shirt and accessorise them. It is all about comfort this time, and of course with style.”

“Nowadays, I focus on and relate more to comfort. And the items are mostly free-size. Everybody can wear it, no matter if you’re the skinny type or plus size. The fitting is versatile due to the way I cut the silhouette. The collection also leans towards a resort-wear vibe because of the weather, and you can see that the men’s clothes are comfortable enough to wear for the whole day,” he added.

Having been in the local fashion industry since 2017, Yacub explained that his inspiration for the colours stemmed from the time he spent in cafes, observing the patrons. He had one month to create the pieces before the launch, and although he admitted that he was tired, in the end, he was glad that the collection was finally ready.

“I was delighted to be invited to showcase my collection at the ‘Kamboh Raya’ event this time, as I have always been supporting young entrepreneurs.

“To me, we must always support young entrepreneurs and designers, as they will be the ones to lead the fashion industry in the near future. So as of now, I hope to be able to work with as many young talents in this field.”

Seeing fashion as a lucrative industry, Yacub advises young designers to treat fashion as a business. “It is not a good idea to create something and not sell it. As designers, we must have ready-to-wear pieces to help our business and for people to wear,” he said.
