KAPIT : Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development , Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi on Monday afternoon presented letters of appointment to about 100 village chieftains in Kapit District who had been re-appointed to serve for another term of office. The village chieftains were from Pelagus and Bukit Goram State Constituencies. The simple presentation ceremony was held at the resource room of the Kapit District Office here.
In his speech at the function, Nanta called on the community leaders and village headmen (Tuai Rumah) to co-operate and work closely with the elected people’s representatives in their areas. He said he had set up two service centres to better serve the people in his Kapit Parliamentary Constituency which covered Pelagus, Bukit Goram and Katibas State Constituencies.
Meanwhi le, Kapi t District Officer, Elvis Didit explained that 90 per cent of the Tuai Rumah had been re-appointed for another four years and that only 10 per cent of them were new faces. He said the post of Temenggong came under the Resident Office while the posts of Pemanca, Pe ng hu l u , Ka p i t a n , Ke t u a Kampung and Tuai Rumah were under the jurisdiction of the District Office.
He added that the applications for the posts of community leaders were processed by the District Office and submitted to the Chief Minister’s Office and later, Bukit Aman for security screening. Elvis also pointed out that it was compulsory to register all the Village Security and Development Committees (JKKKs) of longhouses.
“The files are submitted to the Kapit District Office with profiles of the longhouses including the number of “bilik” (rooms), population census, economic activities, education level, infrastructure and amenities available,” he said.
