KUCHING: Sarawak is prepared to host the much-anticipated World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia Championships.
Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah confirmed the state’s readiness and full support for the event during discussions with the Sarawak Boxing Association (SABA).
“The state government and my Ministry are fully supportive of hosting it here. Such events not only garner international attention but also promote global engagement,” he told reporters following the premiere of the ‘Raya Emas: Salako Sacred Treasure’ movie at the Borneo Cultures Museum Restaurant today (Feb 20).
Abdul Karim noted that the championship, set for April, would significantly boosting Sarawak’s publicity and tourism.
“We’ve assured SABA president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo of our assistance, encouraging him to bring the championship to Sarawak, which he is currently arranging,” he added.
The final decision on the venue, between Singapore and Sarawak, is pending.
Additionally, Abdul Karim extended his congratulations to Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong, also known as ‘Kilat Boy’, for securing a spot in the championship.
His qualification follows a match against Resatul Mahmud Sajin from Bangladesh, which concluded in a draw with scores of 57-57, 57-57, and 57-58, at Kemal Ataturk Park in Banani, Dhaka.
