KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has completed a design for the establishment of DBKU Friendly Neighbourhood (JKM) 3R Centre (Recycle, Reduce, Reuse) and will be implemented at 10 locations.
Its mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said the centres would act as a pilot project to segregate domestic wastes for commercialisation purposes as recyclable materials.
“The personnel in the selected areas for the implementation of KJM 3R Centres will act as managers at the recycling centres.
“The income from selling the recycled materials will be used as funding for community-based activities organised by KJM,” he said during the Kuching City Day 31st Anniversary Celebration at Sarawak Islamic Complex here, yesterday.
He added that if the establishment is successful, it will be replicated at other locations. This would holistically transform the solid waste management system in the city.
“This is an initiative to provide exposure as well as involve participation of the local communities towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)’s Number 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities.”
Wahap also noted that the DBKU KJM Empowerment Workshop, which is held annually, gathers all chairmen or representatives of JKM to create an activity calendar for the year as well as hold a KJM Achievement Report presentation for the previous year.
“Early this March, the workshop was held whereby KJM activities and achievements in 2018 reported a total of 171 activities organised compared to 92 in 2017.
“This year, a total of 219 activities have been planned and as of June 30, it has achieved as much as 83 percent which is consistant with 182 activities conducted by DBKU JKM,” he revealed.
Wahap also said that it was a positive sign as it reflected the inclusion of the community in the city’s development.
KJM was first initiated in 2001 with four establishments. To date, it has expanded to 50 establishments throughout DBKU’s administrative areas.
