SIBU: Red Crescent members were on Sunday reminded of the core values of the organisation and the need to continually perpetuate these values.
“We must reaffirm our voluntary commitment based on seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, namely, humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality,” said Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee, chairman of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch.
“As RC members, we should be proud of our history, proud to be one of the members of the world’s largest voluntary humanitarian service organisations,” he said.
He stated this in his welcoming address at the MRCS Sibu branch’s celebration of World Red Cross & Red Crescent Day (WRCD) held at the branch’s premises here today.
This year’s celebration is themed “Be Humane, kind. Believe in the power of kindness.”
Also celebrated simultaneously were Mother’s Day and Hari Raya Aidifitri.
Chua said the Red Crescent movement is known for giving immediate attention when disaster strikes and be of help when an urgent situation arose.
He said their voluntary humanitarian services do not simply happen just because they mean well or have good hearts.
That happens because they serve with passion, resourcefulness and are prudent about what they do and know how to get things done, Chua added.
Towards this end he urged members to continue their unparalleled giving of aid, time and heart, to lead by example, being visible in the community, showing the public that it is good to roll up their sleeves and aid the needy.
Sibu Resident Wong Hee Sieng was present as the event’s guest of honour. Also in attendance were advisers of MRCS Sibu branch, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau Lee Ming and Datuk Lau Ngie Hua.
