Sarawak is exploring a future where its rivers power vehicles, with water stations replacing traditional petrol stations.

Inspired by Elon Musk’s vision of hydrogen-powered cars, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the state is researching the potential of this technology.

“Musk’s idea involves equipping vehicles with a micro-electrolyser attached to the engine block,” he said during his keynote address at the RAM Conference 2024: Advancing an Inclusive & Sustainable Future – Spotlight on Sarawak at Sheraton Hotel Kuching today (Nov 19).

“This device produces hydrogen, which powers the motor through a fuel cell. In essence, instead of filling up at a petrol station, you’d visit a water station to refuel your car.”

Abang Johari envisions a future where Sarawak’s abundant water resources could be harnessed to power vehicles.

“By drawing water from our rivers, we could establish a network of water stations across the state,” he said.

While acknowledging the high costs of current electrolysis technology, he remains optimistic.

“Just as the cost of solar panels has dramatically decreased over the years, so too could the cost of hydrogen technology,” he said.

“Advancements in battery technology and energy storage solutions are further accelerating this shift towards a sustainable future.”
