MIRI: The Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) summit was officially launched today (Wednesday) at a leading hotel in Miri, underscoring the growing confidence of investors in Sarawak’s forward-thinking economic policies, as detailed in the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, represented the Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the launch.
In his address, Abang Johari highlighted the evolution of urban planning from simple commercial and residential zones to sophisticated, integrated and sustainable smart cities.
“The Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) exemplifies this modern approach, incorporating diverse elements such as a top-ranked Chinese university and a state-of-the-art convention centre.
“The development of KSC demands collaborative efforts from the city council and the private sector. I sincerely hope that through this cooperation, the KSC will be realised as planned,” he said.
He added that the summit reflected the strong investor confidence in Sarawak’s economic strategies, particularly those aimed at post-pandemic recovery and growth.
The PCDS 2030 framework, developed with substantial private sector input, aims to elevate Sarawak’s economy by fostering economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability.
Abang Johari said Sarawak’s initiatives in decarbonisation and the green economy have garnered international recognition, positioning the region as a leader in global climate change efforts.
Investments in Sarawak’s green and renewable energy sectors from countries like Korea, Japan, the UAE, EU, and USA were highlighted, with specific mention of Bintulu and Miri as areas poised for economic resurgence between now and beyond.
The Premier expressed confidence in Sarawak’s continued economic growth, driven by high-income opportunities and renewable energy projects.
“Developing a city like KSC aligns with the economic transformation we envision for northern Sarawak,” stated Abang Johari.
He also lauded the city’s sustainable development model, green architecture, clean energy integration, and community-focused approach, advocating for similar developments across Sarawak.
The Kenyalang Smart City initiative marks a significant step towards transforming Sarawak into a developed, high-income region by 2030, reflecting the state’s commitment to sustainable urban development and economic innovation.
The summit witnessed the signing of seven memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Imasa Dinasti with its strategic partners, aimed at propelling the development of KSC.
These partners are Fudan Institutes of Integrative Medicine; China Investment Financial Holdings; Envision Energy Group; Sinohydro Bureau 12; ESG Malaysia; GreenRE and China Broadnet.
This landmark event underscores the robust investor confidence in Sarawak’s strategic vision for economic and urban growth, as articulated in the Post-Covid Development Strategies 2030 (PCDS 2030).
The KSC summit is an event aimed at inviting investors to participate in the ambitious development of the Kenyalang Smart City.
The project, which will span 543 acres in northern Miri, aims to redefine urban living and economic growth in the region. The Kenyalang Smart City project boasts an impressive expected Gross Development Value (GDV) of RM5 billion.
The development promises a comprehensive ecosystem, seamlessly integrating technological advancements with sustainable living practices. This visionary project includes components across commercial, educational, industrial and recreational sectors, setting a new standard for smart cities in Malaysia.
Among those present at the event included Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew ; Consul-General of the Republic China in Kuching, Xing Weiping; Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching , Raden Sigit Witjaksono; Miri MP Chiew Choon Man and mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang.
