KUCHING: The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to assist the state government to regulate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

NREB said PTTEP Sarawak Oil Limited has become the first company to submit its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission report to the board under the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023.

“The ordinance, which came into force on March 1, this year requires business entities in the energy and oil and gas sectors to register with NREB and submit their GHG emission reports by Aug 28, 2024.

“This submission marks a crucial step towards ensuring compliance and transparency in environmental practices within Sarawak’s energy and oil and gas industry,” it said in a statement.

NREB added the Sarawak government remains steadfast in its commitment to advance sustainable development and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

“The submission of GHG emission reports, as mandated by the ordinance, underscores the effectiveness of Sarawak’s robust regulatory frameworks in ensuring accountability and environmental stewardship within the energy and oil and gas sectors,” it said.
