BINTULU: Tanjong Batu assemblyman, Johnny Pang said the Reef Ball Project is an important initiative for Sarawak’s marine biodiversity.
According to him, the installation of this artificial structure provides a new habitat for marine species such as corals, algae, and fish.
This is important for the ecological balance and sustainability of our fisheries resources, he said, adding to date, the project has created more than 329,000 square meters of new surface for marine life.
Pang said this during an Engagement Session Programme with Stakeholders under the Sarawak People’s Project Reef Ball Phase II and the Community-Based Ecotourism Programme at the Miri-Sibuti Reef National Park, on Saturday.
“In 2023, the Sarawak government was awarded international recognition by the Reef Ball Foundation USA for the creation of the longest Artificial Barrier Reef in the world at 746 km. This achievement not only shows our commitment to conservation but also the economic potential of ecotourism and sustainable fishing,” said Pang.
He also stated that in 2023, the Premier agreed to implement the Sarawak Reef Ball Project Phase II for five years (2023-2025) with an allocation of RM30 million under the People’s Project.
“The Premier is confident that the implementation of this second phase will provide many benefits to biodiversity and the marine ecosystem, and further provide positive returns to the people of Sarawak,” he added.
Thus, Pang invited all parties to join hands and give full support to this initiative for the benefit of future generations.
Deputy General Manager (Management) SFC Japanie Bujang was also present.
