KUCHING: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement that the government will bring back Goods and Services Tax (GST) “if that is what the people want” is hilarious, said State Reform Party (STAR) president Lina Soo.
She stated that, “No people in any country would ever ask their government to tax them!
“Dr Mahathir now says GST is better than Sales and Services Tax (SST). Does he know how to govern the economy, now that he admits he is wrong on the tax policy.
“Is the federal government rethinking that they are wrong on so many other policies?” she asked.
Lina was commenting on the Prime Minister’s statement to reintroduce GST “if it is what the people want”.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had also commented that GST may be reinstated “if people want it”.
Soo challenged the Finance Minister to name one country in the world where the people tell the Finance Minister they want to pay consumption tax (GST).
“This U-turn by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government shows that the Finance Minister is inexperienced and incompetent to manage the country’s finances as prices have gone up, jobs have gone down and the stock market has gone down.
“Yet, he can pull out statistics that does not reflect the reality on the ground, like a magician pulls a rabbit out of the hat! When is he going to come to Sarawak to sing the GST bankruptcy song?” she quipped.
Soo advised Malaysians to tighten their belt as the government’s failure to improve the economy has resulted in only more debt and suffering for the people.
