SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is awaiting approval from the Public Works Department (PWD) before proceeding with the rebuilding or renovation of the Rejang Park wet market, says Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee.

The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said discussions to upgrade the wet market have been ongoing, but progress is pending PWD’s safety certification.

“Why the wait? Because we are waiting for PWD to certify or check whether the building is safe to function as a wet market or not.

“If it is safe, then we will only renovate it. However, if it is not, then we will rebuild it to make it new for the consumers and hawkers,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after distributing 800 umbrellas to fathers in conjunction with Father’s Day, here today (June 16).

Tiang said the market, which was built in the 80s, is a popular wet market, as evidenced by the heavy traffic flow within the area just to stop by at the market.

Meanwhile, on the Rejang Park traffic garden, Tiang said that the Transport Ministry (MOTS) is currently in the process of upgrading the traffic garden.

“They (MOTS) are going to reinitiate their traffic games, which have been stopped for so many years. We will organise traffic games in Sibu in better conditions.

“As a local assemblyman, I will also help by using my funds to upgrade this traffic garden to make it really conducive for the traffic games,” he added.

Meanwhile, when asked further about when the traffic games will commence, Tiang said it may commence next year, as MOTS is focusing on upgrading traffic gardens in Sarawak this year.
