SIBU: Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim has expressed concern over the increasing number of drug users in the state.

Speaking at a press conference during his visit to Sibu police contingent yesterday, Dzuraidi identified syabu as the most common drug abused.

Also present at the press conference were state CID chief Dennis Leong, Sibu OCPD Stanley Jonathan Ringgit and his deputy Martin Koo.

Dzuraidi who will be transferred to CID Bukit Aman on July 25, said police action against drugs could only achieve so much.

“In my opinion, we need to increase prevention and education especially among students and youths so that they will reject drugs as they will be more aware that the substance will not only destroy them but also their family and the community,” he said.

He added that tough actions taken by the police would not achieve much success unless prevention and education against the menace were intensified.

“We have made more arrests of drug pushers this year compared to last year due to the increased effort by the state anti-narcotics department,” he said.

On the overall crime situation in the state, he said it was under control.

“The crime situation in Sarawak is under control. We have also managed to solve most of the cases,” he said.

He commended the Sibu police contingent under the leadership of ACP Stanley for bringing the crime situation in the district under
control.

“The performance of Sibu police is very impressive. There is strong cooperation among the different units and also public engagement. The police here have helped government functions run smoothly,” he said.
