KUCHING: All religious institutions in Sarawak will hold special thanksgiving prayers in all divisions and districts in conjunction with the July 22 Sarawak Independence Day celebrations.
The Director of Other Religions Unit (UNIFOR), Datu Dr Ngenang Janggu in a statement yesterday said the Muslim community would hold the prayer on July 20 at Masjid Darul Hana Petra Jaya near here.
The Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg and Datin Patinggi Dato Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang are among the notables to attend the prayer with other congregation members.
Those of the Bahai faith will hold the prayer on the same day while the Sikh community will organise a similar prayer on July 21 at its temple.
On Sunday, July 22, the Christian community will hold the same prayer in all of its institutions including chapels along with those of the Buddhist and Taoist faiths.
The Hindus, meanwhile, will perform the prayer on July 28. The July 22 Independence Day celebrations mark the day Sarawak achieved its independent status from the British rule in 1963 with Datuk Stephen kalong Ningkan appointed as the first Chief Minister.
