Remand extended for knife brandishing suspect

SIBU: A knife-wielding motorcyclist who was nabbed near Jalan Bukit Assek after allegedly terrorising the streets brandishing a knife while riding recently was yesterday indicted in the Magistrate’s Court here.

The charge preferred against Ling Pick Teck, 42, stated that he had in his possession offensive weapon, to wit, a knife, in a public place, namely at the roadside of Jalan Bukit Assek on Dec 27 at about 9 pm.

Thereby, he has committed the offence of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place which is punishable under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Under the Act, an offender could face an imprisonment term of not less than five years and not exceeding 10 years as well as liable to whipping upon conviction.

The charge was read and explained to Ling but no plea was taken from him as the presiding magistrate was not available.

The case was heard before Sibu Subordinate court’s registrar Romme Ahmad Zaidi who ordered the accused person to be further remanded pending further mention on Jan 9.

It was reported that the arrest followed a 16-second video clip that went viral, showing the suspect riding a motorcycle and waving the knife at the people around Jalan Pulau here, causing public fear.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said in a statement that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) managed to trace the suspect and arrested him near Jalan Bukit Assek around 9 pm on Dec 27.

Seized from the suspect were a knife and a motorcycle used by him who has previous criminal records.
