KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak Women’s Affairs Bureau takes exception to Dr Sim Kui Hian’s “better stay bujang (single)” statement.
The bureau chief Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong admonished the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian for making what it described as a politicised statement in regards to marriage.
She said Dr Sim’s statement had disregarded the foundational value of marriage for political capital.
Last Sunday, Dr Sim in his speech during SUPP Pending Branch’s 35th anniversary
dinner mentioned, “Sarawak owns the riches of oil and natural gas, but after joining Malaysia, has become even more stricken
with poverty.”
He then made a comparison that likened the “after marriage” as having made Sarawak more susceptible to bully and more poverty.
Dr Sim went on to say that “if it being so, it is better to stay bujang-loh (be single) than being poorer in marriage”.
“This is an irresponsible statement, inappropriate, and unacceptable remark and Dr Sim should retract his statement and make an apology. Otherwise it would have put down the true meaning and value of marriage,” Violet said in a press conference at the DAP Headquarters
here, yesterday.
She added that Dr Sim had blended marriage into politics that not only brought upon a distorted and misleading concept of marriage, but in doing so, had also put down the true meaning and value of marriage.
