KUCHING: A total of RM187,453 has been accumulated by the Buntal Fishermen’s Area Association (PNK) in their endeavours to increase the social economy and welfare of the fishermen community in the area.
Deputy director of Malaysian Fishermen’s Association (LKIM), Intan Suhaila Othman said that there was an increase of RM150,429 in revenue by the association in the year 2018.
“This is a positive outcome as PNK managed to increase its total accumulated revenue from RM36,024 in the year 2017,” she said.
She added that this year would be filled with various difficulties for the community as the subsidised programme (Elaun Sara Hidup Nelayan) would be restructured based on the Pakatan Harapan government’s initiative to solve the nation’s financial crisis.
“I hope that the fishermen community can endure and tolerate the difficulties ahead as the fishing industry is coping with issues like the reduction on resource of fish, illegal fishery at Malaysian sea, climate changes, increase of equipment and living costs,” she pointed out.
She also said that in order to breakthrough from the matters at stake, PNK should operate and be involved in the field of business that is viable and commercialised.
“PNK has the potential to go further as they have the capacity to run economical based project that could generate an increase in revenue of their industry; increase potential income and from there a distribution of income towards other members as aligned in the agreement of the association,” she urged.
Intan said this in her speech during the 41st Annual General Meeting of PNK in support of Malaysian Fishermen’s Association (LKIM) at Sri Buntal Hall, Buntal today.
Also present were Buntal Fishermen’s Area Association chairman Drahman Amat and his deputy Mohd Salleh and a Board member of Buntal Fishermen’s Area Association, Djoesman Supian.
