KUCHING: Major renovation works on business premises should only be done outside operating hours.

Malaysia Institute of Architects Sarawak Chapter (PAMSC) chairman Bong Joon Hin said this was to protect and safeguard the public from potential accidents.

“In properly designed and constructed buildings, strict protocols and features are implemented in order to protect the safety of the workers and general public, therefore cases of gas explosion are a rare occurrence,” he said in response to Tuesday’s gas explosion at CityOne Megamall here.

Bong insisted any testing and commissioning of highly volatile equipment in shopping malls and buildings must not be carried out during normal operating hours.

Any weaknesses in safety must be addressed and incorporated into the standard operating procedures to protect tenants and patrons.

“Although we do not know the full facts of the incident, we trust that the property management and authorities concerned will carry out a full and thorough investigation to find out the cause of the explosion,” he said.

According to Bong, following recent increase in high-density residential and commercial developments in Kuching, PAMSC is currently collaborating with the Local Government & Housing Ministry, Fire and Rescue Department on the Sarawak Building Ordinance (SBO) to ensure all building by-laws are relevant and adhere to high standards of safety and health issues.

On behalf of PAMSC, he hopes that building owners and management will work hand in hand with the authorities concerned in future.

“This is to ensure that the by-laws are upheld and buildings comply with high standards of health and safety issues,” he added.
