AZIZUL Annuar Adenan (GPS-Tanjung Datu) has appealed for more utility infrastructure as Tanjung Datu is experiencing rapid development.
He emphasised the need to improve the telecommunication system, provide clean, treated water to residents, and upgrade the electricity infrastructure.
“Tanjong Datu has 97 towers, including existing towers and other digital initiatives.
“Despite all these, we are still facing the issue of no coverage in certain areas of the constituency.
“Improving telecommunication system will support the digital initiative to ensure Sarawak become a thriving society driven by data and innovation where everyone enjoys economic prosperity, social inclusivity and a sustainable environment.”
He said this during a debate in support of the Supply Bill (2023) and motion to refer the Resolution of the Development Expenditure Budget for 2023 on the fifth day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) session on Friday (Nov 25).
On the same note, he said the project to supply treated water, which was approved in 2017, did not cover the entire Lundu area.
He asserted the need for an additional RM170mil to cover the rest of the areas in Lundu as a priority for the next midterm review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).
Azizul also noted that Tanjong Datu was facing consistent disruption of electricity supply of late.
“We in Lundu experience blackouts at least twice a week. According to Sarawak Energy Berhad, this is due to overload and overuse of the available power supply.
“Other than that, most of the electricity infrastructure are old, and I believe that this could only cater to a certain amount of power load.
“As the power supply passes through the grid line from Bau-Lundu up to Sematan, it is approximately six to eight megawatts; the amount provided is not sufficient for Lundu District as a whole if you take into account the major private and public developments that are coming into my constituency,” he stressed.
He also noted that there had been rampant cases of vandalism and theft involving transformers and cables in the area and urged that there be proper enforcement to stamp this crime out.
