VOCATIONAL training programmes centered on green energy technology, particularly floating solar, should be introduced for the Murum community.
In making this call, Kennedy Chukpai Ugon (GPS-Murum) emphasised that the state government and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) should implement these programmes to equip the community with the necessary skills for employment in the growing industry.
“The new economy based on green technology is one of the initiatives by the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg which has attracted significant foreign investments.
“Among these is the floating solar power plant project in a hydro dam lake,” he said this during his debate in support of the Supply Bill 2025 here on Friday (Nov 15).
He said recently the Sarawak government, through SEB has signed a Joint Study Agreement on November 5 with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (PSJC) Masdar and the clean energy company Gentari Sdn Bhd to explore the potential of implementing a floating solar project at the Murum Hydroelectric Dam.
“Through this strategic collaboration, the three parties will conduct a joint study over the next 12 months to develop the project, targeting solar energy generation of up to 1 gigawatt (GW).
“On behalf of the residents around Murum, I would like to express our highest gratitude and appreciation and we warmly welcome this green energy initiative, the Floating Solar Project in Murum.
“I am confident that this project, both directly and indirectly, will bring benefits and job opportunities, as well as socioeconomic advantages, to the local resident.”
Furthermore, in connection with that, he also urged the local labour be prioritised for the green energy project located in the Murum area and that opportunities be provided for the local community to boost their economy by supplying raw materials, offering related services, or participating in eco-tourism.
