KUCHING: A family living in a dilapidated wooden house in Mile 10, Jalan Penrissen here finally has a new house after it was completed under the Minor Rural Project-Sarawak Poor Home Improvement Project (MRP-PPRMS).
Voon Kui Fah, 79, and her 81-year-old husband have been living in the dilapidated house for nearly 40 years.
Now, they have a more comfortable living space and no longer have to worry about roof leaks every time it rains.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said he was happy to see the completion of the new house, which started construction last month.
“Today, together with the assistance from the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Kota Padawan and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), we have successfully built a new house under the MRP-PPRMS,” he said before handing over the house to Voon today.
Lo said the cost included RM20,000 for building materials and additional cost for workers salary, adding up to between RM30,000 and RM35,000.
“I contributed RM15,000 in MRP funding for the building materials while the JKKK raised the remaining sum.”
Voon’s old house was near collapse and badly affected by the recent floods, and Lo said: “This is why we help them, there’s no profit made from building the house, it all comes from the heart.”
He was also grateful to his Mile 10 constituents for their support and initiative, especially Chinese community leader Temenggong Datuk Tan Joo Phoi, for taking the lead in making sure the needy are given help.
“There are still a lot of people who need help, and we will do our best to help them.”
“I also want to thank our Sarawak government and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for initiating the MRP-PPRMS programme,” he added.
Also present were JKKK Kota Padawan chairman Kapitan Chin Hon Jun, Voon Kui Fah’s son Ng Thien Poh and his wife Lee Chiew Ling.
