KUCHING: Those using children to beg for money had better watch out.
Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah called on the public to snap photos of the child beggars and lodge police reports.
“If the public are approached by child beggars at restaurants or any public places, please make police reports instead of feeling pity and giving money,” she said at a press conference here on Monday.
Her statement came after the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association (SSDeaf) had clarified on Facebook that certain teenagers who had approached the public from table to table to solicit for funds were not its members.
SSDeaf president Albert Wong Tuong Chui said the announcement was made to prevent the public from being scammed.
“They are not SSDeaf members and neither are the keychains sold associated to the body. This is to prevent any misunderstanding.”
Besides members of the public, Wong said some of the association’s committee members had also witnessed this activity.
“This happened often at McDonald’s at Third Mile, Tabuan Tranquility coffeeshops and restaurants.
“However, we do not know if they are really deaf teens from China or otherwise,” he said.
