THE third day of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session saw most of the members of the august House voiced out their disagreement over Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen’s refusal to support the motion of thanks to the former Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Majority of the assemblymen have described Chong’s behaviour as uncalled for.
Earlier, Chong in a statement expressed and recorded his profound gratitude and deepest appreciation for the long, invariable and distinguished service of the late Taib.
“My condolences to the family of the late Pehin Sri. It is not my character and of me to speak ill of the dead.
“The late Taib may have contributed to the development of the state but there was also a cloud of suspicion over his administration when he was the chief minister.
As such, I will not participate in the debate except to state my stand and that of my colleague Pending, that we will not support this motion,” he said.
Meanwhile, the DUN sitting started off with the one-hour question-and-answer session.
It was then followed by the tabling of the motion of appreciation to the former Head of State, which was passed after 29 assemblymen debated on the motion.
There was also the tabling of the motion of appreciation for the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s address.
Six assemblypersons participated in the debate on the motion and the sitting will continue on Thursday (May 9).
