Rescuers find body of capsized ship crew

Rescuers found an unidentified body floating in Sungai Ipar Semop on Friday evening and brought it to Kampung Sedau jetty to be taken to Sarikei Hospital for further action.

TANJUNG MANIS: An unidentified body believed to belong to one of the two missing crew of a ship which capsized at Batang Serdeng on Thursday, was found in Sungai Ipar Semop on Friday (Feb 11).

A spokesman from the Sarawak Fire Department operations centre said the body was found around 5.30pm and was brought to Kampung Sedau jetty to be handed over to the police for further action.

It is understood that the body will be taken to Sarikei Hospital for the families to verify.

The second day of the operation involving the police, Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Tanjung Manis and Civil Defence Force (APM), was carried out around the capsized ship and to the estuary in a 6km radius.

The search was postponed at 6pm due to nightfall and will continue tomorrow (Feb 12).

On Feb 10, it is believed that the Laning Drat was carrying a cargo of heavy machinery and three crewmen when it sank around 12am.

At 8.30am, one survivor believed to be the skipper, was rescued by an eyewitness who was on his way to Sarikei Hospital by river.

Firemen from Tanjung Manis who were informed of the incident at 9am, launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation for the missing two victims.

The identity of one victim was revealed as a local skipper, Rosman Bakar while the identity of the other victim is still not known.
