KUCHING: The Taman Tabuan Jaya Residents Association has organised a fire awareness programme, aimed at educating the public on fire prevention and safety measures.

Conducted at the Mayor Song Swee Guan Park, Tabuan Jaya here on Saturday, the programme was also attended by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

Wee said the fire awareness programme was important to prevent any fire incidents or outbreaks.

“Whenever there is a fire outbreak, we rely on the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA). However, it takes time for our firefighters to reach the scene of the incident.

“As such, it is very important for us to have some basic knowledge of firefighting to manage small fires that have just started.

“The ability to put out small fires can not only save our properties, but human lives as well,” he said.

Highlighting Tabuan Jaya as one of the oldest development projects here to one of the most sought after communities in the area, Wee said hundreds of commercial and residential establishments with a huge population are forming active communities in this area.

“With upcoming mega projects, Tabuan Jaya anticipates an influx of thousands in the upcoming years.

“As commercial buildings, shopping complexes, apartments, and improved transportation facilities like our ART system emerge, Tabuan Jaya is poised to evolve into not just a business centre but also a transportation hub, akin to Mid Valley in Kuala Lumpur.

“Thus, given the huge number of populations, fire hazard has become a great challenge in our daily life,” he said.

Wee thus cautioned against negligence as it is a common cause of fire and urged the people to be more alert and careful.

“Moreover, education is also very important, especially reminding children about the danger of playing with fire,” he said.
