KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will not be directly and adversely affected if or when Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resigns, opined Professor Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman.

“This is because the presence of GPS in the cabinet all this time is only in a supportive capacity and not as a component party of the federal PN coalition. Therefore, it will not take any direct hit.

“It may only slightly reduce the advantages and opportunities, particularly in directly bringing issues and motions on Sarawak affairs in accordance with the position of their representatives in various ministries of the federal cabinet,” said the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) political analyst.

He commented that GPS could still work with anyone as a party that is free from being bound to a component party in Malaya.

“Having said that, GPS is not too stressed or affected by the resignation, except to lose its cabinet ministers in the federal government.

“Choosing to work with anyone is GPS’ right as long as it is considered appropriate, in line with the wishes and aspirations desired by the GPS leadership itself.

“If the chosen affiliation is thought to be profitable and gives an advantage to the party and the people of Sarawak, it should be continued,” he explained.

Mohd Fadzil pointed out that in politics, there is no permanent enemies or friends.

“Therefore, if GPS is still needed and given the confidence to work with any government that is established after this, GPS should give the best possible consideration of the opportunity and evaluate something which is profitable and of advantage to Sarawak.

“In other words, whatever will benefit Sarawak, it must be considered by the GPS leadership, as long as the established government understands the Sarawak government’s stance on all aspects that are being fought for and ready to accept GPS as it is,” he expressed.
