KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the Central Database Hub (PADU) earlier this year.
The objective of PADU is to provide a comprehensive and secure database to produce accurate data analysis and enable the government to determine targeted subsidies.
The government is currently diligently trying to encourage Malaysians to register for PADU, with another short message system (SMS) having been sent out to all Malaysian mobile phones urging them to register before March 31.
A total of 3.6 million out of 34 million Malaysians registered as of Feb 21, Selangor being the highest registrar, followed by Sarawak and Johor.
The New Sarawak Tribune met with some members of the public on why they have yet to register for PADU.

I have not register for PADU because I still need to be more confident with the database system. Many things make me feel that way, and I am most worried about the security of the PADU system. What if a hacker has managed to get my personal details to be sold off to a third party, which they can easily misuse? These days, it is all about cyber security, and even if the government ensures us about cyber security, I will still have my doubts.

The reason for not registering PADU is the fear that irresponsible parties will be able to access and misuse the personal data that I have provided to the hub. Secondly, I still do not have confidence in the PADU system because there may be a hidden agenda that we may not know of. Lastly, I do not really have time due to work or other matters, as my work is always around the clock.

PADU may sound like a good initiative planned by the government, but like many, my main concern is data security. Cyber security is a big issue now, especially with dishonest people who will always find ways to access our data. Although the government has assured us that PADU is secure, the allegations about money going missing in bank accounts and scammer activity nowadays are what worry me. Also, many governmental agencies already have our data; can we have the National Registration Department (JPN), the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), and our banks somehow collaborate to help determine our social class in society?

Truthfully, I have never heard of PADU, though I have been introduced to it by people. At that time, I lacked interest and understanding because I was too busy with a lot of work. But, as far as I know, PADU is related to the census.
