Authorities have given the nod for us to reopen, say CityOne owners

KUCHING: CityOne Megamall, which has reopened for business last Sunday, has assured the public that it is safe as declared by experts and the local council.

The mall was directed to be closed to enable investigation to be carried out following an explosion at one of its eateries that killed three persons and injured 41 others on Dec 4.

Giving the assurance, the mall’s management said: “Independent and highly competent engineers, together with Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) had given the go-ahead for the mall to be reopened.”

In a statement posted on its Facebook page,CityOnemanagement said, except for the unit directly affected, other sections had resumed business as usual.

It dismissed rumours that restaurants operating in the mall used piped gas, and therefore all the other eateries in the mall were not in any danger.

Apart from that, all the eateries in the mall have conducted very thorough safety checks on their kitchens, as safety is the management’s top priority, especially after what had happened.

The mall management also conducted a “spiritual ceremony” where a priest had been summoned by the bereaved families to perform cleansing ceremony at the affected area.

Pastors from nearby churches also did a walk-about throughout the entire mall and had prayed over the area for cleansing, peace and safety to be established again.

The CityOne Megamall thanked the public and everyone involved for their kind understanding and feedback.

The management also noted that the second half of the mall would be open to the public tomorrow (Wednesday).

Further confirmation on the matter will be updated through the mall’s Facebook page.
