KUCHING: The risk of flash floods and the number of flood victims in Batu Kawa has reduced following the effectiveness of the retaining wall that is being constructed at Kampung Rantau Panjang.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said once the wall is fully constructed in May this year, it will be able to help reduce the flood problems in the area.

“Actually in Batu Kawa, there is a slight reduction in the number of flood victims as the government has started constructing the retaining wall especially for Kampung Rantau Panjang area.

“Once the wall is fully completed, it will definitely help to reduce flash floods and protect some of the villages from them. Such projects will also be implemented in Desa Wira and Semariang,” he said after visiting the SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa temporary relief centre (PPS), which accommodates 80 people from 19 families yesterday (Mar 2).

The construction of the retaining wall in Kampung Rantau Panjang, is part of the RM11.3 million Batu Kawa river beautification project that started in August last year.

The project, which will also deal with erosion issues, is among the development plans under Phase 5 of the Batu Kawa Waterfront development project and it is expected to be completed this May.

Abang Johari also shared that flooding happened due to overflowing rivers especially during high tide, heavy rainfall and stagnant waters in village areas.

Therefore, the Sarawak government will be conducting a comprehensive study to improve the drainage system and water management system throughout the state.

On his visit to the PPS yesterday, Abang Johari expressed his satisfaction with the efforts and coordination by the rescue agencies and government departments in assisting the flood victims.

“The most important thing is there are enough food rations and a safe place for them to stay temporarily.

“I was made to understand from relevant authorities that the rainy season will last until March 15.

“Hence, I advise the community in the affected area to be remain alert for flood risks and immediately contact the relevant agencies, community leaders and village heads to evacuate to higher grounds,” he said.
