KOTA SAMARAHAN: Grandfather Ernest Chai Oi Khun, 76, made history as the oldest student to graduate at the 28th convocation of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here Monday.

Chai, formerly with the Fiorestry Department, said his desire to embrace new challenges inspired him to pursue a second masters’ degree in information technology management.

“The desire to attain a second masters’ was motivated by my interest in information technology (IT) and acquiring new knowledge.

“I believe that learning is a lifelong educational process,” he said to reporters at the Detar Putra, Unimas here.

He explained that his lack of background and foundation in computing did not deter him from pursuing computer studies.

He considered this a compelling challenge for himself and one of the main goals he wanted to achieve in life.

“I feel this journey is self-fulfilling. Many projects require you to work independently, and from there, it pushes you to find information online,” he said.

For Chai, knowledge of computing is an essential foundation for people today, given its importance in line with global development.

“Today, we are surrounded by digital technology, and fortunately, we have easy access to the internet.

“As long as there’s Wi-Fi at home or a mobile phone, we can do it.

“So, in my view, if I can do it, then surely all of you can too — it just depends on personal motivation,” he said.

Conceding that he had considered quitting several times, Chai said his strong spirit and the unwavering support of his children and wife encouraged him to keep at it.

As to whether he would pursue even higher studies, he disclosed that for now, he plans to spend time tending to his farm.

Chai now holds two masters’ degrees, one of which was earned from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
