SPAOH: Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom has called for an additional RM500 million from the Federal Government to complete crucial agricultural infrastructure in the region, particularly drainage systems for rice crops.
“The region requires RM1 billion for this purpose.
“While the Premier has already approved an initial allocation of RM500 million, we are still awaiting the remaining funds from the Federal Government,” he told reporters at the Spaoh Agrofest 2024 closing ceremony officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Dr Rundi explained the government’s plans to modernise and improve agricultural practices.
“We are distributing allocations from the ministry and the Department of Agriculture to various sectors to intensify agricultural activities.
“However, these resources are not enough,” he said.
He highlighted the Betong Divisional Development Agency’s (BDDA) initiatives as a positive example.
“BDDA has allocated RM265 million to empower economic activities, including building farm roads, organising modern agriculture programmes, and supporting animal husbandry, cultivation, crafts, and the food industry throughout Betong Division.”
“The government’s goal is to provide the necessary facilities to ensure a sustainable and well-directed agricultural sector,” Dr Rundi said, adding, “This is a serious business, not child’s play.”
The need for a shift in agricultural practices is important.
“We can no longer rely on outdated methods.
“The most important change, however, is a shift in mindset. We need to move beyond a profit-loss mentality. If something isn’t profitable, we need to find new, more sustainable ways to operate within the agricultural sector,” he said.
He added that by advocating for knowledge sharing and learning from successful agricultural models.
“We can learn from developed countries like Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand.”
