MIRI: The 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has emerged as a stellar platform for Malaysian athletes, with a flurry of records shattered across multiple disciplines.
To date, an impressive eight SUKMA records and two national marks have been eclipsed.
National Sports Council (NSC) Director-General Abdul Rashid Yaakub announced these remarkable feats at a press conference in the SUKMA cluster Media Centre today (Aug 20).
Weightlifting and swimming have been particular highlights, with national records falling in both sports.
“Just moments ago, I was informed of another SUKMA record being broken in archery,” Abdul Rashid said.
This surge in record-breaking performances, he added, is a testament to the rising calibre of Malaysian athletes, especially among the younger generation.
“SUKMA’s core purpose of identifying and nurturing new talent for national representation is being realised,” he said.
The NSC is committed to refining the skills of these promising athletes to ensure their continued success at the national level and, ultimately, the Olympic stage.
On the organisational front, Abdul Rashid expressed satisfaction with the smooth running of the games.
“SUKMA this year has been exceptionally well-managed,” he said, acknowledging the inevitable disputes that arise in any sporting competition but assuring that they have been handled appropriately.
Also present were NSC board member Alan Ling and Miri SUKMA cluster Media Centre Manager Rosmaini Mail.
