SIBU: The receding river water has thwarted the act of a woman who is believed to be trying to end her own life by jumping into the Rajang River here early this morning.
According to the head of Sibu Fire and Rescue Station Senior Assistant Fire Superintendent, Suna Kaha, it is understood that the victim, who hails from Sungai Meradong, Bintangor , had earlier on joined a drinking session in town with some friends.
Suna said the real cause of the 24-year-old woman’s dive into the river, however, could not be confirmed as she was still in a drunken state after being rescued.
“We received a call from the public at 3.20 this morning informing an individual has jumped into the Rajang River near Jalan Maju here.
“Acting on the information, a team of firemen rushed to the scene and found a woman on the river bank.
“At the time of the incident the woman who was still under the influence of alcohol was on the banks of the river and she was believed to have jumped at a height of three metres,” Suna said.
He said the water situation at that time was receding and the firemen continued to carry out their rescue operations by going down to the river bank using ropes to get her.
He added that the woman suffered only minor injuries. She was finally pulled up safely.
He said the victim was then given initial treatment by the Civil Defence Force (APM Sibu) ambulance team before being brought to Sibu Hospital for further treatment.
