RM1.42 bln for modern public transport system

A SUM of RM1.42 billion under the alternative funding will be invested for integrated and modern public transport system in the state next year.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the key project components are the construction of three Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) lines; construction of Rembus Depot main building; construction of Feeder Bus Depot; and mass production of ART vehicles and feeder buses.

“The Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project is set to transform Sarawak’s public transport system by providing seamless and smart transportation system that enhances connectivity between urban and rural regions,” he said when tabling the second reading of the Sarawak Budget ’25 at the second meeting of the third session of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Abang Johari, who is also the Finance and New Economy Minister, said the initiatives not only promote economic growth but also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.

“This aligns with our pledge to drive green mobility and support the global endeavour to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050, promoting a cleaner environment and inclusive growth for all,” he said, adding that to improve and upgrade the public transport system, RM8 million will be provided in 2025 for the implementation of smart buses in Miri City and RM1 million for the construction of a bus terminal in Kapit.

“For the proposed development of a new international airport in Kuching as I have announced in the last DUN sitting, a detailed feasibility study will soon be undertaken on the development of the project,” said Abang Johari.
